Update on Intern Mallory's Second Half of Internship:

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ

There are very few congregations who have sponsored more interns on a continual basis than Calvary Lutheran Church and even fewer supervisors who have mentored more interns than Pastor Phil.

When we reentered the internship program in 2002, Pastor Phil’s vision was to create an environment with more opportunities than the typical internship site with the goal of better equipping seminarians for their first call.

To that end Calvary interns preach every week, including once a month in sister congregations. They are present for weekly worship in a public space (Kyrie Pub Church) and preach there once a month. They lead weekly youth activities and a disciple camp in the summer as well as an Advent retreat. They engage in varied adult education formats and make pastoral visits in hospitals and in homes.

It’s been said that one year at Calvary is like three years anywhere else. Or as former intern and now Pastor Nick Billardello once said, “I never want to work that hard again in my life.” (Truth is we prepared him to work even harder at Abiding Grace, Southlake 😊)

The goal of Calvary’s internship program has always been to provide the best possible contextual education for future pastors of the ELCA.

There are some internship sites that are designated as detached sites. What that means is that the supervising pastor is at the sponsoring congregation and the intern serves independently in another, smaller congregation.

The pastor of Grace Lutheran, Fort Worth, recently resigned and in conversations with Bishop Assistant Kris Totzke the idea to make Grace a detached site for the second half of Intern Mallory’s internship was put forward.

It is a tremendous opportunity for Intern Mallory and an incredible blessing that Calvary, as the sponsoring congregation, can offer to our sisters and brothers at Grace.

The church council approved Intern Mallory’s primary role in the second half of her internship to be to serve as a Pastoral Intern at Grace with Bishop Gronberg has authorized her to preside at the Eucharist at Grace and her candidacy committee and the seminary have approved it as well.

She will preach once a month at Calvary and lead the disciple camp and Wednesday activities and be involved in the Ladies Retreat.

We are blessed to be a blessing. Thank you for your faithfulness.
